WIRELESS BACKHAUL

DRIVERS AND CHALLENGES

Emerging 3G and 4G wireless technologies, such as EV-DO, UMTS, LTE and WiMAX, are enabling broadband wireless services by dramatically increasing the bandwidth availability on the wireless air-interface.  Ethernet is becoming established as the backhaul interface of choice for these technologies and both wireless carriers and their fixed network partners are faced with the challenge of providing high-capacity Ethernet backhaul to cell-sites over a range of access media. Wireless carriers are also seeking to consolidate 2G networks onto a common backhaul infrastructure and to reduce TDM leased line costs.

KEY APPLICATIONS

  • 3G / 4G wireless backhaul over Ethernet
  • Cell tower backhaul
  • ATM and TDM pseudo-wires for 2G integration
  • Cell tower backhaul over any media

SOLUTION

The FSP 150 and FSP 3000 Wireless Backhaul solutions provide a unified network infrastructure to backhaul traffic from the full range of 2/3/4G Cell sites including WIMAX and LTE over fiber, copper or via leased Ethernet and TDM circuits. The solution includes synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) and TDM line synchronization.

FEATURES + BENEFITS

  • Range of cost-effective Ethernet access devices to support common cell-tower access services over multiple media types, including Fiber, copper, Ethernet and TDM leased lines
  • Extensive demarcation functionality in support of service handoff between wireless carriers and fixed networks
  • Multiple OAM and Service Assurance functions for remote monitoring and management of a large number of cell-site devices
  • Temperature hardened for un-controlled cabinet environments.
  • IETF standardized Pseudo-Wire capabilities for support of TDM services over Ethernet, including Circuit Emulation Service (CES) for 2G and 3G network integration
  • High-accuracy frequency and time of day synchronization distribution with ITU-T G.8261/2/4 as well as IEEE 1588 PTP.
