Broadband Stimulus Singapore
In January 2009, the Singapore government announced a $20.5 billion Singapore dollar (US$13.6 billion) stimulus plan. The plan includes S$4.4 billion to be spent on infrastructure, health and education improvements and up to S$750 million on a next-generation national broadband network (NG NBN).
The goal of Singapore’s NBN program is to provide access to a fiber-based ultra high-speed broadband network to 60% of homes and offices by 2010 and 95% by 2012. This fiber-based system will initially support 100Mbit/s rates, and will migrate to over 1Gbit/s for all physical addresses in Singapore, including homes, schools, businesses, government buildings and hospitals. The NBN program is part of the Intelligent National 2015 (iN2015) master plan to transform Singapore into an intelligent nation and global city powered by Infocomm, the government-sponsored initiative to support the development of information and communications technology.
