R&D Optics Engineer

The Optics Design Engineer will work in the Optical Amplification and Switching team in Atlanta and participate in the design of future generations of ADVA's Optical Amplifier, ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add Demux Multiplexing), and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system.  New optical technologies and components will be evaluated to assess their potential to improve the optical amplifiers and ROADM design used in ADVA's DWDM system.  The engineer will be involved in the selection, qualification, and documentation of optical components. He will be involved in design and development of new optical amplifiers and ROADMs.


  • Deliver high quality product development and support throughout the product lifecycle:  concept, architecture, design, validation, qualification and release into high volume production, and sustaining engineering of existing products
  • Create detailed optical block diagrams and designs that capture product features from initial product concept and marketing requirement documents
  • Develop optical design algorithms and procedures to improve module performance, enhance module features, or simplify module designs
  • Write software to automate the control, monitoring and data acquisition of laboratory equipment for component, amplifier, Reconfigurable Optical Add Demux Multiplexing (ROADM) measurement and characterization
  • Interact with vendors to maintain visibility of new technologies
  • Lead the selection and characterization of optical and electro-optical devices.  Release characterization reports guaranteeing these devices meet ADVA’s procurement and operational requirements
  • Test and qualify optical components and subsystems such as Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), ROADM, wavelength switches and optical amplifiers
  • Create and maintain the Hardware Design Specification (HDS).
  • Create and maintain the Hardware and Integration Test Report (HTR).
  • Deliver all related ADVA Standard PLCP (Product Life Cycle Process) Hardware Documents and release them to Agile
  • Support FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) and Software integration.
  • Support NPI, New Product Introduction and Test Engineering activities in transferring products to CM Contracts Manufacturing
  • Support production engineers during assembly and test
  • Work at the system architecture level in multiple areas of the system or as an expert in a significant technology domain in the areas of Optical subsystem design such as Optical Amplifiers, Switches, ROADM Configurations and Optoelectronics
  • Assist in feasibility analysis of potential new transmission products.
  • Mentor new engineers to help them understand the architecture, design, processes, tools, etc
  • Become a departmental or company expert in one or more technical areas, and be frequently consulted by others for this expertise
  • Participate in full telecom/datacom product design life cycles working in multiple system areas such as Optical Amplifiers and Optical Communication
  • Represent the Engineering department within company forums such as process discussions, customer support, etc.
  • Develop and deliver presentations on specific topics related to optical amplifier and ROADM design


  • Education: BSEE + 6 years, MSEE + 2 years relevant experience
  • Required technical skills: Experience in high speed digital/optical design, optical amplifier and switch design is desired
  • Required performance skills: Experience in the area of EDFA, Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier and RAMAN Optical Amplifier design, thorough understanding of thermal constraints and strong trouble shooting skills in the relevant areas
  • Must be able to collaborate within global design team across all ADVA sites. 
  • Experience in fiber optics test and measurement
  • Experience with MATLAB programming for numerical simulations, data analysis, and test automation
  • Experience with optical system simulation software such as VPI or RSoft is desirable
  • Proficient in writing technical specifications and product documentation
  • Knowledge of optical component reliability and telecom performance standards such as Telcordia, IEC, and ITU are highly desirable
  • Problem solving skills, and capable of proposing and pursuing new ways to improve the ADVA system or the development process
  • Communicate and work well within a team environment
  • Very good command of the English language
  • Work environment/work schedule: Office/lab/ 40 hours per week. 9 AM – 5 PM. Some projects require employees be co-located in a common area for long durations during development
  • Travel requirements: less than 20%
