ADVA’s Advanced Technology group develops the optical networking technology of the future and initiates their transition into ADVA’s products. In this group, there is an opportunity for a motivated and creative engineer or physicist to work towards their PhD degree. 
  • Performing research and development on optical transmission systems
  • Investigation and development of methods for fiber characterization and monitoring
  • Investigation of digital and analog transmission of radio signals over fiber
  • Cooperation with national and international project partners
  • Internal subproject lead for research and advanced development projects
  • Creative application of knowledge and experience in the following fields:
  • Modulation and detection of optical signals carrying digital and analog information
  • Optical physical layer characterization and monitoring
  • Synchronization in optical networks
  • Architecture, systems and sub-systems for optical front-haul networks for mobile communication systems


  • Diploma/Master degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related area
  • Good knowledge in optical transmission technologies and optical fiber characterization
  • In-depth laboratory experience in optical sub-system and system characterization
  • Knowledge in mobile communication interfaces
  • Ideally experience in one or more of the following topics: Analog signal transmission, optical infrastructure and signal monitoring, network synchronization
  • Good programming skills (Python, Matlab, C++, Java)
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Innovative, highly motivated personality
  • Fluent in oral and written English, fluency in German is a plus
  • Capability to think strategic, innovative, constructive and application oriented
